What Is Affirmative Prayer? How It Works and How to Do It in 5 Steps
Affirmative prayer declares and accepts what is spiritually true instead of asking for help. In the Science of Mind tradition it goes by another name, Spiritual Mind Treatment, and it moves through five steps: Recognition, Unification, Realization, Thanksgiving, and Release. Underneath the steps sits one conviction. God is not reluctant, not distant, not holding anything back. Prayer, as Ernest Holmes wrote, “is not an act of overcoming God’s reluctance, but of taking hold of God’s willingness.”
How is affirmative prayer different from traditional prayer?
Most of us learned prayer as petition. Please, God, fix this. There is nothing insincere about that. But petition quietly assumes a gap: God over there, us over here, and the result depending on how well we plead. Affirmative prayer starts from the other side of that gap. If one Divine Intelligence is present in and through everything (which is the heart of the Science of Mind teaching), then prayer has no need to change God’s mind. Its work is to change ours, to move our own conviction from fear toward Truth. The Law of Mind responds to belief. Affirmative prayer is the discipline of believing accurately.
The five steps of Spiritual Mind Treatment
Step 1. Recognition: There is one Power
Turn your attention away from the problem and toward the Presence. Say what God is: infinite Intelligence, boundless Love, perfect Peace, ever-present Life. “There is one Life, one Power, one Presence, God, whole, perfect, and complete, everywhere present.”
Step 2. Unification: I am one with it
Now claim your place in that Power. The wording matters here. “I hope to reach it” keeps the gap open; “It lives as me” closes it. “That Life is my life now. The Intelligence that runs galaxies breathes in me, thinks through me, lives as me.”
Step 3. Realization: I declare the Truth
This is the center of the treatment. Speak the spiritual Truth of the situation as already so, in the present tense. Instead of “I hope I’ll find peace someday,” you say “Divine Peace fills this situation now. Right action reveals itself. Wholeness is the truth of my body, harmony the truth of this relationship, abundance the truth of my supply.” You are not reporting on current appearances. You are naming the deeper reality those appearances have been covering up.
Step 4. Thanksgiving: I accept it with gratitude
Give thanks now, before there is any evidence. Think of a farmer who has put good seed into good soil and is already grateful for the harvest. “I gratefully accept this good, knowing it is already given.” Thanksgiving is what acceptance looks like from the inside, and (as we explore in our guide to gratitude practice) it changes the person who offers it.
Step 5. Release: I let it be
Release the word into the Law and let go of it. “I release this word, and I let it be so. And so it is.” Release is trust, acted out. Nobody digs up a planted seed every hour to see how it is doing.
An example affirmative prayer for peace
There is one Life, perfect, whole, and at peace, and that Life is God. That Life is my life now; there is no place where God stops and I begin. So I speak my word for peace: the Peace that passes understanding fills my mind, quiets my body, and orders my day. Every appearance of chaos gives way to divine harmony, and I move through this day poised, clear, and kind. For this Truth I am deeply grateful. I release this word into the Law, which receives and acts upon it now. And so it is.
Does affirmative prayer really work?
The teaching’s honest answer is: try it and watch. Holmes called Science of Mind a science for exactly this reason. Its principles are meant to be tested, and his writings are still available through the Science of Mind Archives (opens in new tab) for anyone who wants to read him firsthand. What affirmative prayer changes first, and most reliably, is the person praying. Fear loosens. Clarity comes back. The next action gets wiser. And a changed consciousness has a way of changing circumstances over time.
Two things treatment is not. It is not passivity; we “treat and move our feet,” pairing prayer with every constructive step we can take. And it is never a replacement for medical or professional care. It works gladly alongside that care, and the two have no quarrel.
What if I’d like someone to pray with me?
This is one of the quiet treasures of our community. The Center for Spiritual Living San Jose has licensed Prayer Practitioners, people rigorously trained in this particular form of prayer, and they will treat with you and for you. Confidentially. With great love. Some people meet a Practitioner in the building on Clark Street after the Sunday service; others call from a parking lot on a hard Tuesday. Either way works. Learn more about prayer at the Center, or simply reach out.
What are the five steps of affirmative prayer?
Recognition (there is one Power), Unification (I am one with it), Realization (I declare the Truth as present fact), Thanksgiving (I accept it with gratitude), and Release (I let it be, trusting the Law). In Science of Mind this is called Spiritual Mind Treatment.
Is affirmative prayer just positive thinking?
No. Positive thinking tries to paste optimism over fear. Affirmative prayer is the disciplined recognition of spiritual Truth, the presence of God in a situation, held until conviction genuinely shifts. It changes the person praying first, and consciousness is causative.
Can affirmative prayer replace medical care?
No. Affirmative prayer complements medical and mental-health care; it never replaces it. Science of Mind teaches that all healing agencies express one Divine Intelligence, so prayer and professional care work together gladly.
What is a Prayer Practitioner?
A licensed Prayer Practitioner is someone professionally trained and licensed in Spiritual Mind Treatment through Centers for Spiritual Living. Practitioners pray confidentially with and for others. CSLSJ’s practitioners are available to anyone who requests prayer support.
Every Sunday service at 1195 Clark Street includes a spoken treatment, so you can hear affirmative prayer before you try it yourself. And our Practitioners are a phone call away.
